Chapter 19: DDoS (1)

19 – DDoS (1)

With his years of programmer-level typing speed, he actually couldn’t keep up with Dong Jun’s fangirls?

No, it must be the internet connection.

However, even though the barrage was filled with “husband,” Dong Jun hadn’t actually appeared on screen yet.

As per tradition, the concept trailer for the launch event was now playing, hinting at the theme of the conference.

Galaxy’s marketing department was exceptionally skilled, and Galaxy itself had an endless supply of money to burn, so every concept trailer achieved the visual impact of a blockbuster special effects film.

Yet, this time, the style was different from before—extremely, incredibly fantastical.

A young man in flowing white robes—seemingly an ancient Eastern poet, as he held a brush in his hand and occasionally furrowed his brows in deep thought.

He journeyed through many places: a moonlit temple, a desert under the blazing sun, a rainforest teeming with vipers, misty corridors shrouded in rain—grand and intricate scenes that dazzled the eyes. Yet, he remained frowning, as if still unable to compose a satisfactory work.

Finally, in a bright library, before towering bookshelves that reached the ceiling, he encountered someone.

This person’s identity was unmistakable—Stephen Hawking.

The young poet said, “Respected elder, I have traveled across most of the world, yet I cannot capture the entirety of its form. You understand all the mechanisms of how this world operates—could you guide me?”

Hawking, seated in his wheelchair, did not speak. His gaze turned toward the tall bookshelves.

Following his line of sight, the young man retrieved a copy of Hamlet from the shelves.

Hawking’s eyes shifted toward him, gentle and encouraging, as if urging him to read.

The poet opened the book, its pages flipping automatically with a rustle, finally stopping on a page with a bolded line:

“I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space.”

The moment he saw this line, the entire scene suddenly transformed!

The poet’s body floated upward, and another world expanded before his eyes. At one moment, he was at the bottom of an abyss; the next, atop the spire of a human city’s tower; then, in the solemn cathedral of the Renaissance—he even reached mythical worlds, seeing angels and demons, Christ, Mary, and even Buddha.

Finally, all these diverse worlds converged like a kaleidoscope, condensed, and then exploded like fireworks into billions of twinkling specks—against a black screen, a vast Galaxy unfurled.

—The camera shifted to the live broadcast venue, against the same Galaxy backdrop.

The audience erupted—applause, cheers, screams, and cries of “husband” rose and fell in waves.

With the rapid advancement of 3D projection technology, the effect was as if Dong Jun were emerging from the depths of the Galaxy’s stars.

As the applause subsided, the cries of “husband” took the lead.

Lin Xun: “…”

He wouldn’t argue with little girls.

Yes, he wouldn’t argue.

He was calm now, perfectly calm.

These people shouting “husband” over and over didn’t truly understand the beauty of Dong Jun’s code. They were merely drawn in by his appearance and immeasurable wealth—superficial, unremarkable.

—Lin Xun successfully hypnotized himself, calmly turning his gaze back to the screen.

Dong Jun walked to the center of the platform.

He wore a black suit jacket today, with a deep purple silk shirt and a silver-gray tie. His entire demeanor perfectly matched the Galaxy behind him—mysterious and distant.

The glasses seemed to be the same pair, just without the chain.

Facing the excited cheers from the audience, he gave a slight nod. “Thank you.”

The cheers grew even louder, taking quite a while before gradually subsiding.

Facing the crowd, Dong Jun said, “Good evening.”

His style at press conferences had always been cool and straightforward, devoid of much emotional flair, and everyone knew this. They remained silent, listening quietly as Dong Jun continued, “At Galaxy’s first press conference five years ago, someone said I didn’t look like a programmer.”

Laughter rippled from below the stage.

In fact, Dong Jun still didn’t look like a programmer now—his elegant appearance and demeanor… resembled that of a pianist.

“Back then, I replied that a programmer’s initial dream and ultimate mission is to change the world. Beyond that, this profession doesn’t need more labels.”

The venue fell silent, with only his voice echoing, “Five years later, I no longer write code, and Galaxy is no longer just a company focused on algorithms and system development. But what’s worth celebrating is that we’ve always held onto the original idea. That’s why I can stand here today, representing Galaxy to share with you some… small progress about changing the world.”

Thunderous applause erupted.

Lin Xun’s heart skipped a beat.

He recalled Galaxy’s previous press conferences—two of which held particularly significant meaning.

One was Galaxy’s first-ever event, where they launched the Automated Driving System that later dominated all roads and vehicles. The other was the initial realization of the smart city concept—in this area, only Eagle could compete with Galaxy on the same stage.

And this time—

Lin Xun thought back to the various rumors he’d heard beforehand.

Without a doubt, if those rumors were true, this press conference would be another milestone.

Lost in thought, he watched Dong Jun on the screen with slight tension.

Dong Jun’s calm voice rang out, “Seven years ago, VR technology matured. Through VR glasses and full-body devices, we could immerse ourselves in 3D virtual environments. The following year, Kopin launched a virtual reality gaming headset based on head-tracking technology.”

Lin Xun: “”

At the same time, a message popped up on his phone screen from the group chat.

Wang Anquan: Holy shit, they’re actually doing it?

Zhao Jiagou: Fuck, holographic gaming!

Meanwhile, Dong Jun scanned the silent crowd and continued, “This project has been ongoing for many years. During this time, Galaxy collaborated with Kopin, OCZ, and USC, and received support from the Simpson Neurobiology Research Institute. Today, it can finally meet you as a mature technology, and I can claim that Galaxy has achieved a truly free, interconnected, and immersive holographic reality experience.”

At this point, a faint smile seemed to flicker in his eyes. “Personally, I’ve named it ‘Nutshell.’ We are in a nutshell, yet we think ourselves kings of infinite space.”

As these words fell, the atmosphere at the press conference exploded!

Wang Anquan: @Lin Suanfa, I’m buying it.

Zhao Jiagou: @Lin Suanfa, I’m buying it.

Lin Suanfa: Shut up, wait for the price.

The next second, the screen behind Dong Jun began playing the real promotional video for the product “Gokuo 1.0.1.”

A silver-white chamber, three meters long and 1.5 meters wide. Once a person lies inside, thousands of micro-sensors cover the entire body, capturing brainwave signals and neural signals in real-time, defining these signals as actions in the virtual world.

The promotional video does not focus primarily on the holographic game; it holds significant meaning in reality as well.

Because this holographic world is interconnected—game developers can upload game data, create game worlds, and invite players to join, while different users can also meet freely in virtual reality.

If one day, this chamber achieves full adoption—everyone only needs to lie inside the chamber to accomplish everything in the virtual world—such as learning, working, and socializing. Of course, theoretically, that day is still far away. For now, it can only serve as a social tool or gaming platform.

After the exciting promotional video concluded, the stage changed speakers, with Dr. Andre from the Simpson Neurobiology Institute explaining the deeper principles behind it.

The group chat was flooded with messages.

Wang Anquan: The era of holography, I’m here.

Zhao Jiagou: Wake up, I bet we can’t afford it.

Wang Anquan: Then just buy one.

Zhao Jiagou: How would we team up then?

Wang Anquan: Ouch.

Wang Anquan: What about Suanfa? Why aren’t you saying anything?

Zhao Jiagou: The signal on the mountain isn’t great.

Lin Suanfa: Wake up, 5G is everywhere.

Wang Anquan: Xun’er, you’re unusually quiet today.

Lin Suan…fa: I’m just a little overwhelmed by Dong Jun.

Wang Anquan: This wasn’t developed by Dong Jun; it was developed by Galaxy. Get your head straight.

Lin Suanfa: Galaxy = CEO of Galaxy = Dong Jun. Equation holds.

Lin Suanfa: A big chunk of Eagle’s profits comes from the VR industry. Won’t they clash even more with Galaxy? My idol’s mind is going to be wasted on meaningless business competition again.

Wang Anquan: If you’re so worried, why don’t you just fly away?

Lin Xun: “”

He closed the chat interface and continued watching the livestream. Dr. Andre was still introducing the product.

He opened the bullet comments. Phrases like “Hubby, I’m yours” were still plentiful, but more people were excitedly discussing how this technology would spark an epoch-making revolution.

He felt a bit dazed.

At this moment, he should have been as excited and inspired as everyone posting bullet comments, but in reality, he felt somewhat anxious.

Since his teenage years, he had regarded Dong Jun as his idol.

His intentions were completely different from those of the female fans who kept calling him “hubby.” Whether Dong Jun was good-looking or wealthy didn’t really matter. What mattered most were the code he wrote and what he represented—the ultimate dream of a programmer.

Lin Xun admired him deeply. This admiration meant: he recognized Dong Jun’s achievements and hoped to one day become someone like him.

At this moment, as Dong Jun once again stood in the spotlight, Lin Xun suddenly felt less confident.

How much value could Goddess of the Luo River truly create? How wide was the gap between him and Dong Jun?

Lin Xun rubbed his temples.

No, no, Lin Xun, you can’t think like this.

Even though you’re a certified lemon by a doctor, you shouldn’t let that sourness extend to Dong Jun.

But upon careful reflection, it wasn’t jealousy—just a fear that he might spend his entire life without ever achieving anything worth mentioning.

After much thought, he decided he must focus on cultivation to prepare for improving his intelligence.

He glanced at the screen. Dr. Simpson had just left the stage, and next up was a woman from the Galaxy R&D department, who seemed ready to deliver a lengthy speech.

Lin Xun picked up his phone, hesitated for a moment, and finally selected Dong Jun from his contacts, sincerely sending a message.

The message read: Congratulations ^^

Then, he put down his phone, propped his chin on his hand, and listened to the woman’s presentation.

Half a minute later, the phone screen suddenly lit up, and the next second, the ringtone sounded.

Caller ID: Dong Jun.
