Chapter 98: D-L (4)
98 – D-L (4)
The break-up time was over.
Dong Jun kissed Lin Xun’s forehead.
Although it had ended, there was no progress in discussing the issue. Lin Xun also knew this outcome, because such things couldn’t be figured out in ten or twenty minutes—not even in ten or twenty years. Sometimes, doing something doesn’t require time.
“I hope I can create this thing in my lifetime,” Lin Xun said. “Or see someone else create it. As long as it’s created, that’s enough—I won’t be jealous.”
As he spoke, he sighed. “Things like this are milestones, aren’t they?”
Strong artificial intelligence remains a distant and unattainable imagination. It’s easy to imagine that if it were ever truly realized, it wouldn’t just be a technological milestone—it would profoundly affect all of human life and social structures, much like how human civilization was deeply impacted by the two Industrial Revolutions.
After saying this, he looked at Dong Jun.
Dong Jun was watching him, his expression focused and attentive. Behind him, the white curtains billowed like waves.
Lin Xun lowered his eyes slightly. “I…”
Dong Jun: “Hmm?”
“I feel a little… awkward?” Lin Xun said, smiling. “The topic just now—strong artificial intelligence—it’s quite fanciful. If I were talking to anyone else, I definitely wouldn’t bring it up, afraid they’d say I’m daydreaming. But with you, I suddenly really wanted to say it.”
“It’s fine,” Dong Jun shifted his gaze away, looking out the window. “You’re good.”
Lin Xun stood up. “Want to go for a walk?”
Dong Jun: “Mm.”
After leaving the room, the corridor extended upward. The predominantly white architecture made the entire house feel like a snow cave.
It was very cold—that was Lin Xun’s first impression.
His mind lingered on the case Officer Cao had mentioned. He wanted to investigate, but he worried this place might also be involved with demonic creatures. As a walking demon magnet, he feared implicating Dong Jun, so he remained silent, simply following Dong Jun aimlessly through the house. At the same time, he activated his Heavenly Eye technique, continuously observing his surroundings.
All was calm.
His gaze swept over a row of abstract paintings. This place was a music room.
“How strange,” he said.
The frenzied lines exuded a sense of madness. He couldn’t accurately describe the feeling he got from looking at it—it just felt chaotic. He preferred things with order.
He moved on to the next painting, looking at it as he asked, “Does the doctor like these things?”
Dong Jun didn’t look at the paintings with him. Instead, he leaned against the piano and replied calmly, “Not him.”
Lin Xun: “Then his wife?”
“Some were left by the original owner,” Dong Jun said. “He was a famous director. The doctor admired him. Some parts of the house with strong personal style were preserved.”
Lin Xun: “I see.”
The word “director” made him narrow his eyes. According to Officer Cao, the case that had occurred in this manor was similar to the one he and the Cultivation world members encountered in the West District basement. Both also seemed related to filming. Anyone who has studied probability theory knows there aren’t that many coincidences in the world.
Moreover, he felt that these artworks and room decorations all exuded a disordered aura. People who liked such things must have personalities or behaviors that differed from the ordinary.
“But I don’t like it,” he said. “It makes me uncomfortable. Maybe it’s too artistic.”
Then Dong Jun asked, “What kind do you like?”
“I really like your house,” Lin Xun replied. “It’s very orderly. I feel comfortable there.”
After saying this, he turned to look back at Dong Jun—he realized he often found himself glancing back at Dong Jun. Even though they had only known each other for a mere twenty days, the habit had formed surprisingly quickly.
This time, as he looked, his gaze just happened to meet Dong Jun’s.
Dong Jun leaned against the grand piano, a beauty from every angle, with perfectly symmetrical features. Lin Xun often felt the urge to take a ruler and measure his eyes and brows to see if they adhered to the golden ratio. Today, his clothes were no different—strictly black and white, like piano keys.
This person, much like his house, seemed to have been crafted precisely to Lin Xun’s aesthetic.
And this beauty was looking at him, his gaze so intense it couldn’t be described as merely “looking” but rather “staring.” There seemed to be some complex emotion in his eyes.
But his Dong Jun’s eyes were always full of expression. Within two seconds of their gaze meeting, those indescribable emotions smoothly transitioned into a normal expression.
Lin Xun smiled and asked, “Why are you looking at me?”
Dong Jun’s eyelashes curved slightly.
Lin Xun didn’t press further. This wasn’t the first time it had happened. He thought Dong Jun either liked him very, very much or had some ulterior motive.
The former seemed more likely. Aside from being fairly clever, Lin Xun had nothing worth scheming for, and Dong Jun certainly didn’t lack intelligence.
Lin Xun turned his gaze away.
Just then, he saw a dark shadow suddenly flash across the floor!
He whipped his head around to look outside!
Wherever Lin Xun was, if demons existed, they would inevitably be drawn out. This had almost become an unshakable law.
