âBut no worries. The rights to the countdom were just insurance for unforeseen circumstances. The original plan was to dig the Marquis into a hole of debt so massive, he would have to give up the rights to his land. No problem whatsoever.â
âHa! That petty sum of investment and military supplies? You think there wonât be anyone who wouldnât lend me a hand once I become a Duke?â
âYou have more debt than that.â
âWhat?â
âSeriously, you should have raised your son better. Why is it always the useless sons that ruin their fatherâs fortunes.â
â⊠What are you saying.â
âYour youngest son is addicted to gambling. Itâs serious to the point that your entire fiefdom is in jeopardy because of it. I made sure that the receipt was stamped with your familyâs seal instead of his personal one, just in case. Selling all of your lands wonât be enough to repay the debt.â
â⊠Donât make me laugh! You think I would have allowed that? My familyâs seal has been used without my permission!â
âBut you did? You handed over the seal to your Head Promotor, along with the rights to make transactions. You should have been more careful with your seal.â
â⊠This is a scam! You think Iâll stay put in all of this? I will do everything I can to stop this!â
Marquis Lichten screamed, and an exasperated Isaac simply stopped responding. It was Count Wolfgang who responded instead with laughter.
âI see! So thatâs what is happening! Kuhahah!â
âShut up! Whatâs so funny to you!â
âKukuku. Donât you get it? Sir Isaac isnât going to let anyone leave this castle alive. Except my children.â
Wolfgangâs vassals finally understood Isaacâs intentions, and began laughing along with their lord.
âWhat? Impossible. My vassals are outside this castle at thisâŠâ
âAh! Didnât I tell you? They ran away the moment we spread word that the Black Bandits had appeared. Didnât even think twice or even look behind them as they ran. You should have treated your men better. How was there not a single person that questioned where you, their lord, was?â
The Marquisâ face grew pale, finally realising that it was dead silent outside the castle.
âImpossible. My sonsâŠâ
âYour sons were busy fighting amongst one another to become the next Marquis even as they were running away. Birds of the same feather flock together, as they say. How can there be such an uncanny resemblance between your sons and vassals? You really should be thankful to me. I just solved your complicated inheritance issue.â
All strength seeped away from the Marquis, and he collapsed onto the ground.
âCentral⊠Central abandoned me?â
âThink about the bright side. Central looked out for you because you were more valuable than the Count, but they didnât stop me because Iâm more useful to them than you are.â
â⊠I see.â
The Marquis looked as if he had just aged ten years in an instant, and Wolfgang mocked him with a pitiless smirk.
âSo you were in the same situation as I was.â
âShut up! Shut up!â
The Marquis immediately answered Wolfgangâs taunt and picked up a sword from the ground. He charged recklessly, but one flick with Isaacâs chin and the Marquis was turned into a porcupine.
âI know you guys donât have to pay for these bolts, but canât you be more mindful? How many rounds did we use for this pathetic scumbag?â
The agents ignored Isaacâs scolding. Isaac looked at his agents unhappily, but as he approached Elena, his expression changed to a bright, friendly smile.
âSo what would you like to do?â
â⊠I will go with my husband.â
Grab!
Laila held Elenaâs arm tightly, but Elena looked back at her as she gave her best attempt at a smile.
âYou have made a great choice.â
Laila glared sharply at Isaac, when Wolfgang asked.
âI have another request.â
âWhat is it?â
âAs a man who follows the path of the sword, I would like to duel a worthy opponent in my last moments.â
âHmâŠâ
Isaac rubbed his chin problematically, then noticed Laila was still staring at him. Isaac turned and asked Laila with a smile.
âBrat, what will you do if I accept your fatherâs request?â
â⊠I will follow you.â
âHm?â
Isaacâs eyes widened at the unexpected answer, which left both Elena and Wolfgang deeply confused. Laila continued.
âI will learn everything about you. And when I surpass and stand above you, I will kill you.â
ââŠâ
Even her parents were at a loss for words after hearing their child answer in such cold vengeance. Only Isaac laughed gleefully.
âKuhahah! Fine! Thatâs a deal! I happily await for the day you can kill me!â
Isaac crouched and looked at Laila eye to eye as he pat her head.
âBut you better hurry. Thereâs a lot of people lined up to kill me. And youâre the very last one.â
â⊠But I will have the most opportunities.â
Laila slapped away Isaacâs hand. Isaac burst out in roaring laughter and spoke to Wolfgang.
âYou must be proud to have a daughter like her.â
âShe is my everything. And sheâll become the first Lady of Wolfgang.â
âItâll be just as you say. Minus the claim that sheâll kill me.â
Isaac snickered at Wolfgangâs reply, then shouted toward the entrance of the Banquet Hall.
âStop prancing about there and come in.â
With that, Rivelia entered the Banquet Hall hesitantly.
âIâll grumble about your insubordination later. You heard everything right?â
â⊠Yes.â
âThen get ready. And how long are you going to stand there? Arenât you going to come out?â
Pount shook his head, and Isaac left Pount to do as he wished as he clicked his tongue. Seeing something was up between their exchange of look, Wolfgang asked.
âDid you open the castle gates?â
â⊠I am sorry. I couldnât ignore Centralâs orders.â
âWere you an agent of Central?â
âA Mission Support Agent, though I didnât think Iâd be used in this way.â
âI see. Iâd only heard rumours about them, but never thought Iâd have one among us. So we have been in the palm of Central since the beginningâŠâ
âI am sorry.â
âDo you still have the same dream we had?â
âI swear it.â
âThatâs fine. I leave my daughters to you. Make sure Sir Isaac keeps his promise.â
â⊠What?â
Smack!
Pount turned with great surprise, but Wolfgangâs hand was quicker in striking the back of Pountâs neck, incapacitating him. Isaac pouted as he complained.
âWow! I see that a society based on credit and trust is still in the distance. You donât believe me?â
âIn human terms, credit and lies mean the same thing.â
Isaac nodded in agreement to Wolfgang and snickered. Count Wolfgang stood up and shouted at his men.
âNow ! Raise your swords! This is our last battle! We will become the foundation that holds up the Dukedom of Wolfgang!â
âUwooooh!â
Wolfgangâs soldiers and knights roared along with Wolfgang. Isaac ordered to have the fainted Pount removed from the area and spoke to Rivelia and his agents.
âThey are people who live and die by the sword just like you. Why donât you give them a proper farewell for their last moments.â
Rivelia and Isaacâs agents began taking off their hoods and cape, and even their defensive coats. Isaac frowned.
â⊠What are you doing?â
âWe are giving them a proper farewell, just as you ordered.â
Kainen replied. Isaac smirked and left them to do what they wanted. He picked up a cigarette and sat next to Laila, striking a conversation with her.
âI swear everyone wants to look cool. Brat, this is my first lesson. Look over there. Does it look cool? Itâs all useless. Itâs much more efficient to finish the job quickly and rest at home than prattle on and try to look good.â
âBut youâre the one who spoke the most here.â
Isaacâs mouth stopped. His eyes gleamed as he stared deeply into Laia before smiling.
âHa. Youâre definitely something alright. I thought you might have been a decent piece of insurance, but I think I hit the jackpot.â
Isaac mumbled to himself as Wolfgang and Riveliaâs swords clashed, signalling the start of the battle between the Count and Isaacâs agents. Though the Countâs men were elites moulded by experience in battle, Centralâs agents were savants that had undergone rigorous selection processes.
Though the battle was fierce, only men of Count Wolfgang fell to the ground. After some time, the Banquet Hall was quiet, save for the sounds of Wolfgang and Riveliaâs duel.
The agents circled around them, forming a stage. They hit the tip of their swords onto the ground on a rhythm. Within the strange echoes of the arena, Wolfgang and Riveliaâs swords danced.
They cut, parry, stabbed, and swung, measuring each otherâs strength. Their swords would sometimes intertwine, only to separate in an instantâwhen all of a sudden, Wolfgangâs sword flashed and struck at Riveliaâs heart like lightning.
The swordâs tip was only a handspan away from Rivelia, when she suddenly spun and parried Wolfgangâs sword towards the ceiling. Rivelia immediately followed with a cut at Wolfgangâs chest.
âDad!â
Lailaâs scream momentarily slowed Riveliaâs swing, but it was too late. Blood poured from Wolfgangâs open chest, and he knelt onto the ground.
Rivelia hesitated to give the finishing blow, when Count Wolfgang raised his hand, stopping her.
âStop. I have lost. You are indeed a Sword Master. It was an honour to fight you.â
âI will ease your pain.â
Riveliaâs voice quivered, but Wolfgang refused Riveliaâs offer.
âYou are not the person who will kill me.â
Wolfgang struggled to catch his breath. He looked at Elena, Julia and smiled at Laila, albeit weakly. His eyes then turned to Isaac.
âCome, Sir Isaac. It is you who will kill me.â
âYour body wonât be in a pretty state if you die to me you know? You sure you want to see your kid off as a bloody mess?â
âEven better.â
Isaacâs eyes opened wide at Wolfgangâs delighted response while Isaacâs agents mumbled amongst one another. They had been first-hand witness to the shotgunâs ability to ravage the human body into a ragged jumble of meat.
Isaac exchanged looks with Wolfgang for a moment, then shook his head as if heâd lost and stood up.
âMan. Youâre a great man. You really are. Is this what a noble is?â
âThink of this as a parentâs determination, to become stern for the future of his children.â
Isaacâs face stiffened, listening to Wolfgangâs mumbling.
â⊠What do you mean?â
Wolfgang formed an inexplicable smile, and then he spoke.
âThank you. And I am sorry.â
â⊠Whatever. It was outside my calculations, but whatâs the problem with having one more. It makes no difference. But I still donât understand why Central didnât recruit you. You were the only person who figured it out here. Just from the information you heard in this room alone.â
âLetâs just say that I wanted it to be this way.â
â⊠Itâll be as you wish. Any last words?â
Isaac asked as he drew his shotgun. Wolfgangâs eyes went towards his family once more.
âLaila, listen well. It is Sir Isaac who killed me. If you want vengeance, it must be at Sir Isaac. Remember it well.â
With that, Wolfgang looked at Isaac with a refreshed look.
âYou⊠You really are something. This is the first time Iâve thought that it was a waste to kill someone.â
âI thank you again. And I apologise.â
âSame to you too. Itâs fine. You should thank your friends. It was them who asked first.â
âReally? Huhu. They were great friends.â
Wolfgang smiled and laughed at himself, and Isaac pulled the trigger. With a âbang!,â a shower of pellets exploded in Wolfgangâs chest, which caved in completely.
â⊠Mum.â
âIâll leave Julia with you. Thereâs only two of you left now. So make sure you two play nice and help one another.â
Elena approached Count Wolfgangâs body. Rivelia spoke out with a sorry look.
âYou donât have to do this. I swear on my familyâs nameâŠâ
âLady Rivelia.â
Riveliaâs body stiffened in the face of a determined womanâs eyes.
âYes?â
âThereâs no need for it.â
âButâŠâ
âMy child will become the Duchess.â
Lady Elenaâs stern, determined gaze rendered Rivelia at a loss for words.
ââŠâ
