Chapter 652: I'll Do It Myself
Akado had promised Mercedes he would be home for dinner, but he still spent a long time walking through the cemetery in the suburbs. Every one of his actions carried a deep meaning, and each one made those who loved Germany even more fervent.
He caressed the tombstones one by one, reminiscing about the faces and smiles of their owners one by one. After all, this country needed so many people to contribute silently, and the silent contributions of so many had made this country the most powerful in the world.
One tombstone after another, one name after another. Many familiar names were buried here, including many famous Germans from the von Seeckt era. Among them was the former Chief of the German Air Force General Staff, who had died of illness. He was one of the founders of the German strategic air force and an important high-level official who had always supported Akado’s development of it during his lifetime.
Today, the various contributions they had made to Germany had undoubtedly been proven to be incomparably correct. The things they had insisted on back then had now become important bargaining chips for the German army to dominate the world. And now they were forgotten in the long river of history, not remembered by the people.
These men were not as famous as Guderian who had swept across France, not as famous as the Desert Fox Rommel, not as famous as the ferocious Heydrich, nor as famous as August, Krupp, or Speer. But their contributions to Germany could absolutely not be ignored. Akado was now grateful to these people who had passed on. It was because of them that Germany was so powerful today.
“Keep this place clean. Every person buried here is a hero of the nation. We cannot neglect anyone who has made an outstanding contribution to the fatherland, understand?” Akado sensed that it was getting late. He turned his head and said to the cemetery administrator who was following behind him, “This is the final resting place for all the meritorious subjects of the Empire. I am entrusting it to you. Do not let me see a single moment of negligence!”
“My Führer! I will personally wipe every tombstone here. Every day, I will walk through every part of this place with my men. In the future, if I cannot finish in one day, I will take two!” the SS officer in charge of the cemetery replied, standing at attention.
“Thank you for your hard work!” Akado patted the officer’s shoulder and nodded. “Take care of every blade of grass and every tree here for me. When I close my eyes and am buried here, I don’t want to be badmouthed by these old friends!”
“My Führer! I am willing to guard this cemetery with my life! If I die, then my son will continue to guard it, until the end of time!” The officer was clearly a fanatical admirer of Akado. His eyes were filled with worship. Akado had no doubt that if he asked him to kiss the Führer’s boots at this moment, he would immediately kneel at his feet.
Akado nodded in satisfaction and concluded this memorial visit. He walked back to the main entrance of the cemetery, said a few words of encouragement to the SS soldiers standing guard in their dress uniforms, and then got into his car. He had Anna check the time; it was already around 6 in the evening.
“Since I’ve thought of it, and I have the time today, let’s make a trip to the Berlin First Hospital,” Akado said. While in the cemetery, he had thought of his old friend, Einstein. He was afraid that he would get busy and forget to visit this old friend whom he had not seen in a long time, so he decided to go to the hospital first before returning to the Führer’s residence.
“My dear,” Anna said, as there was no one else in the car and a soundproof, bulletproof steel plate separated the back seat from the driver. She did not use Akado’s formal title. She linked her arm with his and said softly, “You promised Sister Mercedes you would be home for dinner. It’s already dinner time. Isn’t it a bit inappropriate to change the itinerary now? As for Dr. Einstein, if you must go, you can spare some time to visit him tomorrow morning.”
“No!” Akado waved his hand, rejecting Anna’s suggestion. “Let’s go now. I haven’t visited this old friend in a long time. Although he has let me and Germany down in terms of technological research, in our personal friendship, he has never wronged me. We were friends, after all. I should go and see him.”
“But, Sister Mercedes… is probably still waiting for you to come back, right?” Anna said to Akado with a frown. For Anna, matters of state and friendships between men were not that important. She was more concerned about Mercedes, about this somewhat unconventional little family.
“Let her wait for me a little longer. I will definitely be back for dinner,” Akado said with a helpless sigh, signaling Anna to issue his decision.
Anna had no choice but to pick up a radio transceiver and begin to issue the Führer’s latest orders: “This is Anna. The convoy is proceeding to the Berlin First Hospital. The plan to return to the Führer’s residence is canceled! I repeat, the plan to return to the Führer’s residence is canceled! The convoy is proceeding to the Berlin First Hospital! Codeword: ‘On the road where scorpions appear’.”
“Car one, understood!” “Car two, understood!” Soon, a series of confirmations came from the speaker. Akado knew that someone would definitely contact the Führer’s residence to change the arrival time of the Führer’s convoy.
“When you make contact, inform the Führer’s residence that no matter how late it is, the Führer will definitely be back for dinner!” Anna glanced at Akado and then added this sentence. Only after hearing Anna say this did Akado close his eyes with some weariness and rest his head on her shoulder.
He had not rested since he got off the plane that morning, so he had to seize every moment to replenish his energy. If he had a choice, he would rather his day had 30 or even 40 hours to deal with the endless pile of documents and various reports.
After the car slowly came to a steady stop in front of the First Hospital, Akado immediately opened his eyes. His body had become accustomed to the feeling of sleeping on a swaying vehicle. As soon as the vehicle stopped, he would open his eyes at the first moment, as if he had never been asleep at all.
A man who controls the most profitable economic conglomerate in the world, owns a series of famous companies, and has a daily income that is an astronomical figure; at the same time, he is the actual ruler of a vast empire, with a degree of central authority that would make many monarchs blush, and a million-strong army under his command that is invincible. If such a man could still find time to take care of his family, it would be a miracle.
Akado got out of his car. Under the streetlights, he put on the leather coat that Anna handed him and, surrounded by his guards, walked into the entrance of one of the Third Reich’s best hospitals, the Berlin First Hospital. The director, who had already finished his work for the day, was waiting respectfully by the main entrance to guide this great and powerful Führer of the Empire.
“The patient’s recovery is quite good. The gunshot wound has healed very well…” Someone had clearly informed the director in advance. As Akado passed by him, the director immediately reported on Einstein’s recent condition. This Dr. Einstein was a gunshot wound patient who had been transferred from the hospital in Rotterdam. When he arrived, he had just regained consciousness, and his condition was much worse than it was now.
“Has anyone come to visit him?” Akado asked the guide as he walked forward. He had no interest in remembering the name of everyone who appeared beside him, unless the person had something that made him worth remembering. Flattery, clearly, did not count.
“No one has come to visit him. I heard that he was involved with British spies, so his old friends and colleagues have not come. After all, no one wants to be too close to someone who has collaborated with the enemy…” The director seemed to have done quite a bit of research on this special patient’s background, and his first words were a guess that was close to the truth.
Akado suddenly stopped in his tracks, then looked at the director and said in a cold voice, “He was coerced by British spies into leaving Berlin. This is what I am personally telling you. From now on, you will tell everyone you meet three times a day, ‘Einstein is a good friend of the Führer.’ You will do this for three full days. Understood?”
“Yes, yes…” The director also knew he had spoken out of turn and wished he could slap himself twice. Hearing that the Führer did not seem to intend to punish him severely, he quickly nodded and apologized. “Yes! I will definitely say it! I will definitely say it! Dr. Einstein’s room is just ahead, my Führer!”
When Akado pushed open the door, he gave up the idea of punishing the hospital director. The room was much better than he had imagined. There were blooming flowers on the windowsill, the whole room was spotlessly clean, and Einstein was sitting in a wheelchair, writing and calculating on a small blackboard. In fact, this was the standard for the hospital’s senior wards, and there was no special treatment. But it was this uniform standard of hygiene that had saved the life of the director, who had already lost favor in the Führer’s eyes.
“Dr. Einstein, my old friend. I’ve been remiss for not coming to see you for so long,” Akado said, walking up behind Einstein.
“I am very happy that you could come to see me. At this moment, I have never felt more comfortable. You are my friend, not the Führer of the Empire,” Einstein said with a smile, putting down the chalk in his hand. “This shows that I really do have a good friend, not a superior.”
“It’s hard to say. Maybe I am visiting you as a superior,” Akado joked with a smile.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m very happy that you could come,” Einstein laughed along with him. He moved the wheels of his wheelchair with his hands and turned around. “Would you like something to drink? My friend? I don’t have much to offer you. As you know, my legs are not very convenient.”
“It’s alright, I’ll do it myself!” Akado waved his hand. “Just like the old days, I’ll help myself.”
