Chapter 495: Conversation
Seeing that Punk had lost his patience, Kane maintained his vigilance while putting on an exaggerated pout. Even at this point, the cunning knight still refused to directly reveal his “big secret”—he needed to gauge Punk’s attitude more clearly first.
This was the caution of the powerful, a necessary prudence in communication between long-lived beings. Even though Kane understood Punk well, he still had to maintain this essential wariness… After all, both Kane himself and Punk were creatures of chaotic alignment, and familiarity with each other’s personalities couldn’t serve as reliable reference after more than seven hundred years!
Moreover, the “big secret” Kane was preparing to share was truly astonishing!
So the typically boisterous knight stood up directly and said to Punk:
“Cyan, before we formally begin our discussion, this master still needs to clarify a small doubt. You should know that I, Kane, have always looked down upon those without ambition throughout my travels across the lands. So I just want to ask one thing—Punk Cyan, what are your thoughts on the path to Legendary?”
Kane’s voice echoed through the empty hall. The soundproofing barrier trapped all sound while amplifying the reverberation effect, making Kane’s questioning resonate like solemn, passionate bell chimes.
“Does such a foolish question even require doubt?”
Seeing Kane’s smiling yet sharp-eyed expression, Punk quickly realized the knight before him was being unprecedentedly serious—Kane was genuinely determining whether Punk intended to charge toward Legendary status. Clearly, Punk’s response would directly decide whether the “big fortune” Kane mentioned could be realized.
Or perhaps… the willingness to advance to Legendary was the prerequisite for Kane’s so-called “big fortune”!
Therefore, Punk who had similarly become serious grew much more cautious. When Kane asked about the “path to Legendary,” Punk had already entered an unprecedented state of concentration, because he was precisely a Level 19 Peak Spellcaster currently charging toward Legendary status. Any information related to Legendary couldn’t escape Punk’s attention.
Thus, with his expression remaining cold and detached, Punk replied impassively:
“Neither of us are the kind of insignificant weaklings who would stop at Master-Level. This won’t change no matter how much time passes. As a Level 19 Peak Spellcaster, I can only tell you clearly—I’m determined to claim the path to Legendary. Those who aid me are friends, while those who dare obstruct me… are mortal enemies!”
After glaring ominously at Kane, Punk concluded his response. He had clearly answered Kane’s inquiry while simultaneously… issuing a warning to this knight whose schemes remained unknown.
Kane showed no particular reaction to Punk’s answer. Just as Punk had stated, after experiencing two journeys together, both he and Punk had come to understand each other’s personalities. Punk’s current unwavering determination to charge toward Legendary status was within Kane’s expectations.
Therefore, after hearing Punk’s response, the knight’s expression turned mysterious as he spoke with both seriousness and excitement:”I knew you were a restless soul too, so this grand plan can’t proceed without a great mage like you. After all, every hero’s journey needs a wise spellcaster in the party – that’s what makes an adventure truly exhilarating…”
“Enough rambling! Get to the point!”
“Fine, fine. Someone clearly has no appreciation for artistry. Can’t compare to this magnificent me at all.”
Sensing Punk’s undisguised impatience, the visibly excited Kane finally stopped his meaningless chatter. The flamboyant knight planted his boot on the stone seat, drew his lance while pointing it toward the moon, and declared loudly:
“Come, my friend! Let’s embark on an adventure! To seek divine treasures and claim the legacy of a true god!”
CRACK
“Huh?”
BOOM
As Kane put his weight into the pose, the makeshift stone chair couldn’t withstand the knight’s heavy armor and spiked riding boots. Cracks spread rapidly before the entire chair shattered into rubble, leaving Kane stumbling awkwardly to avoid falling flat on his face.
“This damned chair… My brilliant entrance is a rare spectacle!”
Hopping back two steps lightly, Kane complained loudly about the shattered chair while pretending not to care about Punk’s response. Yet his pupils remained locked on Punk’s gaze, and his tense muscles betrayed that the knight wasn’t nearly as nonchalant as he appeared.
Meanwhile, observing Kane’s completely serious demeanor, Punk immediately realized the knight’s proclamation was no jest. It was precisely because of Kane’s deadly seriousness that Punk’s expression turned grave at the mention of “god.”
“A god? Do you realize what you’re saying, Kane? This isn’t something to joke about!”
Hearing Kane’s proposal, Punk guessed the knight had likely set his sights on some secret realm or divine ruins where the resident deity was confirmed to have fallen.
But even that didn’t mean coveting divine wealth was safe. While gods were generally looked down upon by mages as slaves of the multiverse, their power was absolutely not to be underestimated. Typically, even the lowest “Weak Divine Power” deity possessed strength equivalent to level 20-29 Legendary Experts. Moreover, gods had their ultimate fortress and prison – the God Realm – as their stronghold. However much such beings might be despised, Punk had to admit they were completely beyond what Master-Level beings could imagine confronting. Not even a fallen god was something mere ants had any business coveting.
Therefore, Punk’s response to Kane’s proposal was unequivocal:
“If you’ve lost the will to live, then go die alone. I won’t accompany a madman on a suicide mission. Know your place as an ant, Kane! What gives you, a mere insect, the confidence to covet a giant’s wealth?”Punk’s words were far from polite. He certainly knew how vast a fortune a deity could accumulate over their long lifespan, but Punk was self-aware enough to understand that a strong individual’s wealth was never easily obtained. Even with the prospect of immense gains… it wasn’t worth risking his life!
However, Kane showed no anger at Punk’s sarcasm. He merely responded with a cold laugh and retorted sharply:
“Ants? Giants? A dead giant is just a pile of flesh. Even the smallest ant possesses potential that cannot be ignored. I’ve now obtained a precious opportunity beyond imagination—a perfect chance for an ant to truly feast on a giant’s corpse! As for recklessness? What in this world could be more reckless than attempting a near-suicidal advancement to Legendary rank? I’ve just reached level eighteen and already have the courage to take this risk. Punk? You… don’t dare?”
