Chapter 268: A Meteor Falls from the Sky
“Feeling better now?”
“Yeah, much better.”
Yu Feng washed the blood off his face and walked out of the bun shop.
“Since you started reincarnating, what’s the longest you’ve ever lived?” Jiang Li asked curiously.
“The second-to-last time I broke through to the Nascent Soul Stage, I lived for seven years.”
“You reached the Nascent Soul Stage in just seven years?” Jiang Li was surprised. He wasn’t shocked that Yu Feng broke through to Nascent Soul, but he was surprised Yu Feng managed it with only Three Spiritual Roots and no one guiding him. Seven years was awfully fast.
Unless he didn’t care about his foundation and just rushed toward higher realms.
Yu Feng explained awkwardly, “Well, the higher your cultivation, the fewer fatal disasters you encounter. I just wanted to become strong as soon as possible and stop reincarnating.”
Every time he reincarnated, he tried to change the fate of his parents, villagers, and friends—but he never succeeded. Over time, he stopped trying, just kept running, dodging whatever came his way. He finally reached the Nascent Soul Stage, only to accidentally hurt someone and start all over again.
Yu Feng thought he was trapped in an endless cycle of death, doomed to repeat it until the end of time—until Jiang Li came along and showed him that he didn’t have to keep running, that things could be changed.
He was truly grateful to Jiang Li.
The old granny was supposed to be the Foundation Establishment Stage cultivator who resisted the beast tide. Now, the beast tide was gone, the Foundation Establishment cultivator was gone, the bandits were gone, and the village was saved. The future he remembered had completely changed.
“You can’t keep doing this. If you don’t build a solid foundation and just charge forward recklessly, you’ll hit a wall in the Soul Formation Stage.”
“Soul Formation isn’t strong enough?”
“Guess how many Fusion Stage cultivators will want you dead with your kind of luck?”
Yu Feng didn’t even try to guess. Even one Fusion Stage cultivator looking at him the wrong way would mean starting over from scratch.
Six months passed, and under Jiang Li’s guidance, Yu Feng advanced rapidly and smoothly became a Foundation Establishment cultivator.
Those six months had been full of danger for Yu Feng—one crisis after another.
Like the time he got thirsty and almost drank from a well—which turned out to be home to a beast. Anyone fetching water would get swallowed alive.
Yu Feng simply poisoned the well, killed the beast, then sealed it off, saving future passersby.
Another time, Yu Feng was passing through a forest and slept in a tree at night, only for a Golden Core sword cultivator to appear and start hunting demons in the dark—he nearly sliced Yu Feng to death by mistake.
When the cultivator saw that he almost killed Yu Feng, he didn’t even apologize—just gave a cold snort and left the forest, annoyed that Yu Feng was in the way.
“Senior Jiang, is it this way?”
“Yeah.”
Yu Feng was heading toward a perilous place shrouded in miasma year-round. Inside were many rare heavenly treasures that were useful for Foundation Establishment and Qi Refining cultivators.
Unfortunately, although the resources were great, the place was deadly. Without the right method, stepping in as a Foundation Establishment cultivator was suicide.
Yu Feng had just broken through to Foundation Establishment and needed herbs to stabilize his cultivation. This dangerous place had exactly what he needed.
A graceful figure flitted past Yu Feng, leaving him dazed. He blurted out,
“Senior Sister?”
The woman thought Yu Feng was calling out to her, turned her head, saw she didn’t recognize him, and kept going.
“Wake up, hey, wake up.” Jiang Li waved his hand in front of Yu Feng’s face. It took a while before Yu Feng snapped out of it.
“You know her?”
“Yeah, her name is Wu Lian. She used to be my senior sister.”
Yu Feng explained that he had once taken a master, and the sect had a senior sister named Wu Lian.
Wu Lian had doted on her little junior brother, always saving the good stuff for him. Seeing him so gloomy every day, she would act like a big sister, offering guidance and comfort that had warmed Yu Feng’s heart.
But the good times didn’t last. Disaster struck the sect, their master died tragically, and both Wu Lian and Yu Feng were caught up in the calamity.
Yu Feng had tried to change their fates—but no matter what he did, he couldn’t stop his master or senior sister from dying.
“If I could, I’d want Senior Sister Wu Lian to survive,” Yu Feng said firmly.
Jiang Li pondered for a moment. “You like her?”
“Ahem, it’s admiration, just admiration.”
“Oh.”
“Wait, don’t go any farther,” Jiang Li suddenly called out to Yu Feng.
“What’s wrong?” Yu Feng was confused.
Jiang Li pointed to the sky, then to the front. “Two Fusion Stage cultivators are fighting in space. One knocked a meteor down from orbit—it’s going to land over there.”
“What? That’s never happened before!” Yu Feng’s face changed.
He hadn’t been to this place before, but its deadly reputation was well known. It had always existed in the future—how could a meteor fall now?
“We probably did something that triggered a chain reaction, which ultimately caused a meteor to fall here.”
Jiang Li was speechless. What kind of unlucky guy gets killed by a meteor?
He saw that the two Fusion Stage cultivators were using powerful techniques—one practiced the Blood River Technique, the other was a master of poison.
“Then we need to run right now—wait, Senior Sister Wu Lian is still up ahead!”
Yu Feng had just turned to flee when he remembered Wu Lian was in the danger zone. If the meteor landed, she was doomed!
He had to save her!
“Senior Jiang, can we go save Senior Sister Wu Lian?”
“It’s the right thing to do.” Jiang Li nodded. The meteor was indirectly their fault. Even if not directly responsible, they still had a hand in it. If Yu Feng’s beloved senior sister died because of it, he’d carry the guilt forever.
Hearing this, Yu Feng sprinted forward at full speed.
“Wu Lian—uh, Senior, please wait!” He wanted to call out “Senior Sister Wu Lian,” but realized he hadn’t joined the sect yet, and technically didn’t know her. So he corrected himself.
Wu Lian was at the Golden Core Stage.
Seeing Yu Feng calling out, Wu Lian stopped, puzzled by what this little cultivator wanted.
Jiang Li turned invisible.
“What is it?” Wu Lian had sharp hearing. She noticed Yu Feng started to say her name, then changed it midway. He seemed suspicious to her.
“Senior, a meteor is about to fall! Please leave this area immediately!”
“A meteor?” Wu Lian looked up. The sky was clear—no sign of a falling rock.
It was still too far away for her to see.
“Yes. I’ve cultivated a technique that allows me to sense fortune and misfortune, predict the future, and avert danger. Right now, I’ve sensed a meteor is going to strike.”
Someone suddenly tells you disaster is coming—and they’re a lower realm than you? Of course Wu Lian didn’t believe him.
Seeing that his senior sister didn’t believe him, Yu Feng gritted his teeth. “One quarter of an hour. If nothing falls after that, I’ll accept whatever punishment you give me.”
His tone was so sincere that Wu Lian, half-believing, decided to leave the area with him and flee far away.
Ten minutes later, Wu Lian saw a meteor blazing with flames cutting across the sky, flying toward where they’d been.
Shocked, Wu Lian grabbed Yu Feng and fled even faster.
“Senior…”
“Shut up, or you’ll bite your tongue!”
Another five minutes passed. The meteor struck the earth with blazing light and fire, sending up a deafening roar and a tsunami of dust.
Wu Lian cast a spell to shield them both, held Yu Feng close despite propriety, as sand and stone roared past—deeply unsettling.
“Senior…”
“I know you were right. You don’t have to keep saying it!”
“No, what I meant was… why didn’t we just dig a hole and hide underground?”
