According to my research, In this novel the path from Qi Refining to Foundation Establishment to Golden Core combines three traditional Chinese concepts: Internal Alchemy (Medicine), Astrology (Stems & Branches), and Botany (Fruit).
Here is how the system works:
Qi Refining Realm (炼气境):
Ten Layers: The first three are the Early Stage, the middle three are the Middle Stage, the last three are the Late Stage, and the tenth layer is the Great Perfection and here one get to make their Qi ‘seed’
(Note): The True Qi Technique is crucial. True Qi are divided into 9 Ranks and 36 Grades.
Below Rank 7: No hope for Foundation Establishment.
Below Rank 3: No affinity with the Golden Core.
Foundation Establishment Realm (筑基境):
Stages: Early, Middle, Late, Perfection.
Cultivation Logic: The cultivation of a Foundation Establishment Perfected One is essentially paving the road to the Golden Core Dao Fruit. This is called the “Dao Path.” Note: Each “Dao Fruit” is unique. If someone else achieves Wall-Top Earth Dao Fruit first, and that seat is taken, and you cannot achieve it (as seen with the tragedy of the Shaman-Ghost Dao).
Requirement: One must gather Four Great Medicines from the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches (Two for each) totaling 4 to complete the Dao Path.
Gather One Great Medicine: Middle Stage Foundation Establishment.
Gather Three Great Medicines: Late Stage Foundation Establishment.
Gather Four Great Medicines: Foundation Establishment Perfection.

In this novel’s cultivation system, the powers required for the “Dao Path” are categorized using Daoist numerology.
Heavenly Stems (天干) & Heavenly Spirits (天罡): The powers/energy derived from the Heavenly Stems are referred to as Heavenly Spirits (Tiāngāng). These represent the 36 superior, celestial energies.
Earthly Branches (地支) & Earthly Fiends (地煞): The powers/energy derived from the Earthly Branches are referred to as Earthly Fiends (Dìshà). These represent the 72 terrestrial, often baleful or fierce energies.
For example there is the [Red Rú Scale] is identified as an Earthly Fiend (the specific power/energy) that belongs to the Earthly Branch position of [Tuntan] (the astrological category).
