Chapter 2226: The Erasure
Chapter 2226: The Erasure
The Painter, after looking for forty thousand Cosmic Eras, concluded that Eos’s feint had been a feint about nothing, designed only to waste the Painter’s attention, and, noting this, it adjusted its expectations of Eos’s tactics accordingly.
The Painter became, after this, slightly more willing to ignore Eos’s apparent feints, because some of them were about nothing.
The piece was older than the Cancellation. It was, in fact, the oldest piece on the board, older than any of the Painter’s other reserved pieces, and Eos, seeing it lifted, knew without being told what it was.
The musical interval was, at the surface level, a feint. At a deeper level, it was a piece. The interval, when played on certain folk instruments in the particular tunings of that continent, produced a faint sympathetic resonance with a frequency embedded in the substrate of the affected branch of the Tree, a frequency that had been laid down, very long ago, by the woman by the stream looking at the sky for an hour every evening, and inherited by her descendants and her order and her faculty and her discipline.
Songs travel faster than disciplines, even faster than trade.
When the Painter moved, it did not move on the branches of the Tree. It moved on the table.
Eos had been, for two hundred million Cosmic Eras, training the Painter to dismiss his feints. He had been losing small visible games on purpose, executing feints that resolved into nothing, in order to teach the Painter that his feints were not worth attention.
He executed it now.
Eos noticed the underweighting two hundred million Cosmic Eras later, by which point the woman in the observatory had been dead for a hundred and ninety-nine million years and the observatory had been sacked and rebuilt thousands of times and the order of women had evolved into a guild and the guild had evolved into a discipline and the discipline had spread, by trade and travel and the mechanisms by which disciplines spread, to one hundred and seven worlds on the same branch of the Tree.
After two hundred million more Cosmic Eras, three of the seven new branches had developed their own descendants of adro. The total was now four branches. After a Grand Cosmic Era, eight branches. After three Grand Cosmic Eras, twenty-three.
It was the stone that had been moved two fingers wide one hundred and forty thousand years and three Grand Cosmic Eras ago.
He did this by allowing, at the level of taste in the substrate, certain shipping routes to seem slightly more attractive to the merchants who plied them. He did not need to whisper to the merchants. The substrate of an Existence has a faint texture of preference, and a tenth-dimensional being who is also the Telos of that Existence can adjust the texture by a margin smaller than any inhabitant could detect.
The move was clearly a feint. The Painter, having been trained by previous feints to underweight Eos’s misdirections, glanced at the move and dismissed it.
He had been doing this so that, when he finally executed a feint that was not a feint, the Painter would dismiss it.
The Painter understood, in a single instant, that Eos had made a move three Grand Cosmic Eras earlier and that the move had been propagating, undetected, ever since.
The Painter looked at Eos.
And with the shape of these songs, repeated for long enough across enough worlds, it was beginning to remind the substrate of Existence what it had forgotten.
Examining the Cancellation, the Painter saw that the piece was working as designed, and it examined the worlds to find that the worlds had no asking left in them, and yet it knew that something was wrong, but it could not find a cause.
Eos saw the property begin to take shape and did not, even now, look at it directly.
The folk music of the continent, played on the new interval, began, generation by generation, to carry the signature, which was spread by song.
One hundred and seven worlds, all using descendants of the word adro. None of them asking who watches. All of them, in their various local idioms, capable of saying something is not where it should be.
The third move was to encourage trade between the hundred and seven worlds and a hundred and seven other worlds on six other branches of the Tree.
𝚏𝕣𝖾𝔢𝔀ℯ𝗯𝓃𝗼𝘷𝚎𝙡.𝑐𝑜𝒎
This was the third mistake. The Painter had begun to underweight Eos’s misdirections.
The frequency was not music. It was the harmonic signature of something is not where it should be, transposed into the auditory register.
The Painter, who had been monitoring the broad health of the Cancellation’s work, noticed at the twenty-third branch that the Cancellation’s effective reach had begun to plateau. It had not lost ground. It was still closing the question of who watches on every world it reached. But the rate at which the substrate of the affected worlds returned to baseline calm after the closure had begun, very slightly, to slow.
The Cancellation could not close songs. The Cancellation had been built to close questions, and even after the Painter had widened it to close adjacent questions, songs were not in its scope. Songs are not propositions. Songs do not assert that someone watches. Songs simply have shapes.
This was the correct decision because indeed the musical interval was a feint, but the dismissal was the mistake, because the Painter had just dismissed an Eos move without examining whether the dismissal itself was being engineered.
The substrate of that branch of the Tree had begun, by the gentle compounding pressure of a hundred and seven cultures all unable to ask the question the Cancellation had closed but all able to describe its absence, to develop a faint property that was not who watches and was not I am watched and was not anything the Cancellation had been built to close.
He made his third move of the second age.
The merchants, finding the routes attractive, traded.
The Painter, finally, looked at the music, and it saw in the music, the signature, and traced the signature back through the discipline, the guild, the order, the woman, the stream, back to the stone that started it all.
They carried goods and also carried stories. They carried, embedded in the stories, the small, unannounced habit of saying something is not where it should be, and the stories were translated into the local idioms of the worlds they reached, and the habit, in being translated, took root in the new languages.
For a while, the Painter did not move. This was the first long stillness the Painter had experienced since the second age began.
Eos was, at that moment, making a small move on a different branch of the Tree, a move involving the introduction of a new musical interval into the folk music of a particular continent.
By the time the Painter looked back at the branch and noticed that the plateau in the Cancellation’s effectiveness had become a slight decline, eighty more branches of the Tree had been infected. The signature was now in the folk music of one hundred and three branches.
This was a metaphysical property that belonged to the substrate, not the inhabitants. It was the kind of property that, accumulated across enough worlds for enough Cosmic Eras, would begin to have effects on the geometry of the branch itself.
It was the property of something is missing here.
It reached out one shrouded hand and lifted, from a part of the board Eos had not realized contained pieces, a second piece.
It was the piece called The Erasure.
