Chapter 41: Chapter 41

As long as someone was willing to take the lead, it was easy to sort out a clear plan. The citizens of the Sis Territory were inherently accustomed to the presence of Order, and Ron hailed from a highly ordered modern society.

The several captains quickly negotiated their respective squad’s defense zones. Ron’s Blood and Fire Squad was assigned a sixth of the area on the right side of the sentry post’s frontal palisade.

They also agreed that if one side faced greater pressure, the other squads would need to provide timely support.

What Waynes was testing was everyone’s performance when facing the wolf pack’s assault, not the number of kills. Providing support in this current environment of Order could actually earn a higher evaluation.

Not only did Ron understand this point, but the other squads were also well aware of it.

Soon, each squad set up in their respective defense zones. Ron led the men of the Blood and Fire Squad to the front of the sentry post’s palisade.

The palisade here at the Blackstone Sentry Post was actually made of living trees. Through artificial trimming and vine weaving, they formed a simple protective barrier around the post.

There were gaps between these trees. These gaps were not large enough for large animals to pass through, but they were sufficient for the apprentices’ spears to thrust through.

Ron briefly assigned tasks based on the training from the past month, and then ordered everyone to replenish their food and water, resting while waiting for the wolf packs to arrive.

…

As the distant wolf howls grew closer, Ron was soon able to see blurry black shadows moving rapidly across the snow in the distance through the gaps in the palisade.

Seeing this scene, he didn’t hesitate in the slightest, immediately shouting, “Eastern Sector One, the wolf pack is almost here!”

“Are they here already!”

Justin clung to the front of the palisade, observing carefully, and asked in confusion, “Aren’t they still a distance away?”

“They are very fast. It will be too late if we wait until they charge right up to us.”

Saying this, Ron gripped the spear in his hand and took a slight step back. Although he felt that an ordinary wolf pack couldn’t break through a palisade made of native trees, he couldn’t be sure that the wolves of this other world didn’t have any special traits.

Overestimating the enemy was his consistent principle.

At the same time, the other squads that received the message quickly sent back their replies:

“Western Sector One, wolf pack also spotted.”

“Western Sector Two, no wolf pack spotted yet.”

“Western Sector Three, none spotted either.”

“Eastern Sector Two, wolf pack spotted!”

“Eastern Sector Three, none!”

By sharing information with one another, the six squads quickly discovered that the wolf pack was unexpectedly attacking from the front of the sentry post, with absolutely none coming from the back.

After a brief moment of thought, Ron figured out the trick to this. Waynes wanted to see everyone’s performance, so he certainly couldn’t be expected to pace back and forth around the sentry post.

Clearly, looking at Waynes right now, he didn’t seem like he was going to come out for a stroll, which meant the wolf pack would, in all likelihood, only appear at the front of the sentry post.

Thinking of this, Ron immediately notified the other squads:

“The wolf pack is very likely to only appear at the front. Each of our six squads will dispatch one person to form a lookout group. If there are any changes with the wolf pack, we’ll make new arrangements!”

After speaking, he looked toward his own team members, “Which of you will go as the observer?”

“I’ll go, my eyesight is the best.” Dimi volunteered for this task.

Just as he said, during their previous training, he was indeed the most outstanding in identification and observation, whereas Ron excelled in his physical body and coordination abilities.

“Dimi, alright, it’s you! We’ll escort you to Squad Nine first, and then you and someone from Squad Nine will head to the other squads.”

Ron immediately issued the order, and then they sprang into action. The reason they needed to “escort” him was because of the mental pressure brought about by the truth of the world outside the territory; only by being deep within Order could it be mitigated.

The Blood and Fire Squad was a miniature Order system. Although they were currently within the sentry post forged by the Sis Territory, which could be considered as inheriting a portion of the power of Order extending from the territory, moving about alone still carried risks.

As the de facto captain of the squad, Ron naturally needed to consider his team members’ well-being.

After escorting Dimi to Squad Nine (the ninth squad of the recruit training camp), he led the rest of the men back to their defenses immediately. By this time, the wolf pack was already close enough that the details of their fur could be seen clearly.

“Ready your spears, brace for frontal assault.”

“Yes.”

Justin and the others had resolute expressions. As they gazed at the approaching wolf pack, a glint of something called murderous intent flashed in their eyes for the very first time.

…

“Bang!”

The wolves charging at the forefront slammed heavily into the wooden palisade, letting out dull thuds. A few unfortunate wolves with smaller heads even crammed their heads right through the gaps in the palisade.

For these existences, Ron naturally didn’t hesitate to thrust his spear into them. The sensation felt a bit tough, but was immediately followed by softness, and in the next moment, fresh blood seeped out from the spear tip.

Expertly withdrawing the spear to thrust again, it wasn’t just Ron; even for genuine teenagers like Justin, Karel, and Pat, there wasn’t the slightest change in their expressions.

With resolute gazes, they followed the movements from their daily training, selecting suitable targets to thrust their spears out and pull them back in an endless cycle.

Very soon, the ground beneath Ron’s feet became “muddy.” Of course, this wasn’t actual mud; given the consistent style of the Sis Territory, how could they possibly not pave the inside of the sentry post with stone slabs!

Not to mention that a quarry was right next to this sentry post.

The muddiness he felt was caused by the warm wolf blood melting the snow and ice. Coupled with the constantly wafting scent of blood, for a brief moment, Ron felt as if he were in a slaughterhouse.

This was not a battle; this was a massacre.

A group of well-trained quasi-soldiers, facing a pack of mindless beasts while protected by a palisade. If they still couldn’t achieve a one-sided crush, their month of arduous training would have truly been for nothing.

However, this situation wouldn’t last for long!

If it were a normal wild wolf pack, they would have surely started fleeing in the face of such slaughter. In fact, judging from how the wolf pack charged and assaulted the sentry post’s palisade, all of this was within the arrangements of the Sis Territory Knights.

“Dimi, have any wolf packs been spotted at the back?” Ron shouted loudly.

“No! Even if a few stray wolves wanted to circle around to the back, they’d turn back halfway to charge the front again.”

Dimi also shouted his response. Having not yet directly participated in the battle, he could see clearly that the wolf pack wasn’t here to attack at all; it looked more like they were running for their lives.

And running for their lives in a strictly fixed direction, no less!

“Then you guys come back! Join the frontal battle as a temporary seventh squad.”

Ron’s voice was very loud, overpowering the wolf howls and traveling far. In truth, this also served as a kind of release for him. Even though he had undergone a lot of slaughter-related training over the past month, killing living creatures directly was still a first for him.

Before his transmigration, he hadn’t even killed a single chicken. Heaven knew how he had suddenly become so cold-blooded now!

“Ron, the wolf corpses are piling up. They might be able to step on their companions’ bodies to jump over the palisade. We must make a quick decision on whether or not to go outside the palisade to fight the enemy!”

“Go out!”

Ron replied without hesitation. Since this was a test, Waynes definitely didn’t want them hiding behind the palisade.

Now they had a palisade to serve as a barrier, but when they became Formal Knights and fought against Aberrant Beasts and Evil Spirits in the future, what else could serve as their barrier?
