Chapter 225: One in a Thousand Probability

Chapter 225: Chapter 224: One in a Thousand Probability

Yu Zhiming could tell Pu Xinhua wasn’t being entirely truthful, but his story was likely eighty or ninety percent true.

Picking a fight to teach that psycho a lesson—that was probably true.

But Yu Zhiming didn’t believe they had planned to set a trap and kill the guy from the very beginning.

Setting aside whether they had the malicious intent or the guts for it, his relationship with them simply wasn’t that deep.

One should repay a drop of kindness with a gushing spring, but not to the point of risking their own lives and fortunes.

Yu Zhiming guessed that something unexpected must have happened while they were confronting him, triggering a psychotic episode.

It was a classic case of a plan gone awry. The situation spiraled out of control, ultimately leading to the fatal crash.

Regardless, Yu Zhiming appreciated their intention to stand up for him.

To be honest, the moment he heard that the psycho was dead, Yu Zhiming had felt a surge of elation and relief.

His tone softened considerably. “What about the police?” he asked.

This time, Xu Jin spoke up.

“Our official statement to the police was that we were just at the bar to relax and have fun. When we saw that guy taking advantage of Lu Xiaoqing, we confronted him and got into an argument.”

“After a while, we realized something was off about him, so we decided to back off and leave the bar.”

“We just never expected him to be so relentless. He started chasing us on his motorcycle like a madman.”

“We deliberately split up, but he fixated on Lu Xiaoqing and wouldn’t let up.”

Xu Jin quickly added, “We didn’t just leave Lu Xiaoqing to face the danger alone! Her riding skills are excellent. Besides, the more bikes that are clustered together, the more likely an accident is to happen.”

“We followed behind them and called the police.”

“The rest of the story is all over the internet.”

“Police cars and motorcycle cops showed up and tried to stop him, but the man was crazed. He wouldn’t slow down or respond to them, right up until he crashed into the roadblock.”

Pu Xinhua picked up the story. “The police’s preliminary conclusion is that we’re not at fault. It was the guy having a psychotic episode.”

Yu Zhiming murmured an “oh” and changed the subject. “Why is Lu Xiaoqing working as a food delivery driver?”

“Doesn’t she work here?”

Xu Jin gave a bitter smile. “Fewer people are riding motorcycles these days. Our shop is barely making ends meet.”

“So we take turns doing food delivery on the side to earn some extra money.”

Yu Zhiming glanced around the thousand-square-foot shop again. He saw plenty of motorcycle parts and accessories on display, but only seven or eight bikes were in for repairs.

“There will probably be fewer and fewer motorcycles in the future. Have you guys thought about changing careers?”

Xu Jin sighed softly. “The few of us got together because of our shared passion for motorcycles.”

“Besides repairing and modifying bikes, we don’t really know how to do anything else.”

“If it really gets to the point where we can’t go on, we’ll figure something out then.”

Hearing this, and having no better ideas to help them at the moment, Yu Zhiming gave them his phone number.

“If you need anything in the future, feel free to contact me.”

“I haven’t been in Binhai for that long, but I’ve made some decent connections.”

“Maybe I can help you out…”

Yu Zhiming exchanged a few more pleasantries with Xu Jin and Pu Xinhua before leaving the motorcycle repair shop.

Back in the car, Yu Zhiming started the engine and glanced at Gu Qingning, who was sitting quietly in the passenger seat.

“Since when are you so well-behaved?”

Gu Qingning’s eyes widened, and she asked in an aggrieved tone, “You mean you don’t like it when I’m obedient?”

“You prefer me to be rebellious and cause trouble?”

Yu Zhiming shot her a look. “What kind of nonsense is going through that little head of yours?”

“By the way, have your parents contacted you in the last few days?”

Gu Qingning looked a little uncomfortable and said evasively, “I spoke with my mom on the phone a couple of times. We didn’t talk about anything important.”

Yu Zhiming didn’t press the issue and drove straight back to the Zijin Garden District.

When they got back to the apartment, they saw that Fourth Sister wasn’t home. She had probably gone out to have dinner with Zhang Bai.

“I’ll make dinner! Zhiming, what do you want to eat?” Gu Qingning volunteered enthusiastically.

Yu Zhiming shot her down. “It’s not a question of what I want to eat, but what you’re capable of making.”

“When it comes to cooking, don’t you know your own limits?”

Gu Qingning retorted, unconvinced, “Zhiming, don’t underestimate me! I can follow recipes and video tutorials and make lots of decent-looking dishes.”

“You said it yourself—’decent-looking’.”

Yu Zhiming teased, then added, “I won’t make things difficult for you. Just boil some dumplings.”

“I ate a big lunch, so I’m not that hungry right now.”

Just then, Gu Qingning’s phone rang.

She answered, said a few words, and handed the phone to Yu Zhiming.

“It’s Jiang Lin from the Furong Club. She wants to ask you something.”

Yu Zhiming took the phone and greeted her politely. “Boss Jiang, hello.”

Jiang Lin’s giggles came through the phone.

“Hehe… Dr. Yu, we’re practically family soon. Just call me Lin, like Qingning does.”

Yu Zhiming glanced at Gu Qingning’s back as she scurried into the kitchen, then changed the subject. “Qingning said you had a question for me?”

“Oh, it’s just a small thing!”

Jiang Lin said softly, “Dr. Yu, I have a club member who… well, she accidentally got pregnant. She’s about two months along.”

“She needs to find out who the father is before she can decide whether to keep the baby or terminate the pregnancy.”

“Dr. Yu, is there a reliable way to get a test done?”

Yu Zhiming said thoughtfully, “At two months, a paternity test can be done through chorionic villus sampling.”

“The accuracy rate for this method is over 99%, and the results are usually available in about a week.”

He added, “However, this procedure, chorionic villus sampling, requires a needle aspiration and carries certain risks.”

“There’s a chance it could cause a miscarriage or fetal abnormalities, so the mother needs to consider it carefully.”

Yu Zhiming then suggested, “I’d recommend waiting another two or three weeks. By then, all we’d need is a sample of the mother’s peripheral blood. It’s painless for her, and the accuracy is still over 99%.”

“Most importantly, this method avoids any risk of intrauterine infection or miscarriage for the fetus.”

Jiang Lin gave an awkward laugh over the phone. “Dr. Yu, her situation is… a bit special. She doesn’t have time to wait.”

“Dr. Yu, if you were to perform the chorionic villus sampling yourself, the risks of miscarriage and fetal abnormalities would be eliminated, right?”

Yu Zhiming replied with a mix of caution and confidence, “I can’t say the risk would be zero. I can only say that the possibility of miscarriage and fetal abnormalities would be significantly reduced.”

Jiang Lin’s urgent voice came through the phone. “Dr. Yu, are you free right now?”

“It’s that urgent?” Yu Zhiming asked, surprised.

Jiang Lin sighed on the other end. “With something like a pregnancy, once you know, you want answers as quickly as possible.”

“Dr. Yu, could I trouble you to help us out… please?”

After ending the call with Jiang Lin, Yu Zhiming shouted toward the kitchen, “Qingning, don’t worry about dinner!”

“I have to go to the hospital. We’ll eat out tonight.”

“Okay! Yay!”

Gu Qingning’s reply was exceptionally cheerful. She deftly turned off the stove, tidied up, and shot out of the kitchen like a gust of wind.

The entire process took less than a minute.

Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but roll his eyes.

’She really doesn’t want to cook, does she? And all she had to do was boil some dumplings…’

Yu Zhiming brought Gu Qingning to the Qi Yue Medical Research Center at Huashan Hospital. After waiting for about ten minutes, Jiang Lin finally arrived with another woman.

The long-haired woman wore a long black dress that highlighted her excellent figure. She had a slender waist, long legs, and was generously endowed where it counted.

However, she wore a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a mask, completely obscuring her face. Even after meeting Yu Zhiming, she showed no intention of removing them.

Yu Zhiming didn’t mind. ’It’s not like I need to see her face to perform the aspiration for a paternity test.’

Still, the necessary medical paperwork had to be completed.

Yu Zhiming glanced at the name she signed on the medical consent form.

“Wang Huahua.”

’I knew it,’ he thought. ’That has to be a fake name.’

As soon as Yu Zhiming brought “Wang Huahua” into the examination room and began the checkup, he discovered a small issue.

“Ms. Wang, you’re carrying twins.”

“So, will I be taking one sample of the chorionic villi, or two?”

Jiang Lin, who had followed them into the examination room, couldn’t help but ask, “Twins can’t have two different fathers, can they?”

“It’s possible,” Yu Zhiming explained.

“If a woman has intercourse with two different men within a short period, say twelve hours, and happens to ovulate two eggs during that time, it’s possible for the two babies to have different fathers.”

“Of course, even if both those conditions are met, the probability of it happening is extremely low.”

“It’s about a one-in-a-thousand chance.”

“Furthermore, performing the aspiration twice also doubles the risk of complications.”

Yu Zhiming looked at “Wang Huahua” and asked again, “So, for the chorionic villus sampling, will it be one procedure or two?”

“Wang Huahua” met Yu Zhiming’s gaze, her voice a bit strained. “Let’s do two. Just in case.”

’The lives of the rich and famous are truly a mess.’

Yu Zhiming sighed inwardly. Outwardly, his expression remained professional as he began to perform the uterine aspiration on “Wang Huahua.”

It wasn’t a difficult procedure for him, and he finished quickly.

Yu Zhiming handed the two specimen containers to “Wang Huahua” and gave her directions to the hospital’s DNA identification center, telling them they could submit the samples there themselves.

“Wang Huahua” mumbled a word of thanks with her head down, then hastily fled the examination room.

Jiang Lin, who had stayed behind, took a thick envelope from her handbag and pressed it into Yu Zhiming’s hand.

“This is for your trouble, and for your discretion. If you don’t take it… Ms. Wang won’t be able to rest easy.”

As he walked out of the hospital with Gu Qingning, Yu Zhiming waved the thick envelope in his hand and declared magnanimously.

“There’s five thousand yuan in here. Tell me what you want to eat—anything you want.”
